(Panama City, Fla.) - As the New Year kicks off, Floridians have been encouraged by the state to make "green" resolutions through adopting environmentally friendly practices. One easy way for residents to help protect our air and environment is through using alternative means of transportation.
"As an example, Floridians can ride a bike, walk or use mass transit instead of always relying on their cars," says 1,000 Friends of Florida Executive Director, Charles Pattison. "This helps protect our environment, as well as enhance our quality of life."
It is apparent from recent record-breaking Bay Town Trolley numbers that many around the county are on the right track. In 2005, Bay Town Trolley reached its highest ridership numbers ever - rolling past its previous record set at 177,098. December riders reached 20,124, bringing year-end ridership to 242,467 - a 37 percent increase from the total number of riders at this time last year.
"We are ecstatic to see such significant ridership growth for the year," says Beth Coulliette, Executive Director for Bay Town Trolley. "Many residents have realized that the trolley is an efficient, clean and affordable transportation alternative. With new benches and shelters being constructed in 2006, we anticipate ridership numbers to easy break the quarter-of-a-million mark."
Bay Town Trolley's continued success can be attributed to several factors, including expanded service, placement of benches and shelters, increased gas prices and the desire of many residents to contribute to environmentally friendly practices.
Bay Town Trolley is an award-winning transit system that serves the growing needs of Bay County, Monday through Friday, with hundreds of stops daily. For more information about Trolley routes and service call (850) 769-0557 or visit www.baytowntrolley.org. Bay Town Trolleys are equipped with bicycle racks and wheelchair lifts.
