(Panama City, Fla.) - As Bay Town Trolley ridership continues to soar, Bay County government municipalities are gearing up to install new benches and shelters at stops with the highest boarding numbers.
Two benches and one shelter, contracted through the Bay County Transportation Planning Organization, were offered to each municipality free of charge. Springfield, Callaway, Panama City, Parker and Mexico Beach have chosen to participate in this community-wide endeavor. Each local government is responsible for permitting, installation and maintenance.
"As the trolley system continues to flourish, we are excited to provide such amenities to riders," said Brenda Hendricks, Parker City Mayor and Chair of the Transportation Planning Organization. "These are the first of many benches and shelters to be installed throughout the community."
In February, 20,771 passengers boarded the trolley, bringing the yearly total to 42,405. This reflects a 30 percent increase from the number of riders at this time last year. With ridership significantly rising, benches and shelters play a critical role in improving the overall quality of the system.
"Our ridership numbers speak volumes about the need for benches and shelters," said Doug Boice, General Manager for Bay Town Trolley. "We are thrilled to see local government entities supporting public transportation in our area."
