(Panama City, Fla.) - As gas prices skyrocket, many Bay County residents are realizing that this problem is here to stay. Significant price increases are beginning to strain pocketbooks and the benefits of public transportation are quickly becoming a reality.

Whether concerns are a result of gas prices, traffic congestion or environmental quality, a number of residents are foregoing their automobiles and turning to the Bay Town Trolley. Evidence of this can be seen in the trolley's increased passenger numbers. March ridership reached 26,721 - a 30 percent increase as compared to this time last year.

"These numbers reflect the highest monthly ridership in our history," said Doug Boice, General Manager for Bay Town Trolley. "In addition, we see more first-time riders than ever before. It's great to see so many new people experiencing the benefits of public transportation."

With gasoline prices expected to reach $3 per gallon this summer, Boice believes the system will only continue to grow.

"There's no question that rising gas prices are making everyone look for more affordable transportation options," said Gregg Laskoski, Managing Director, Public and Government Relations for AAA Auto Club South. "Many Florida communities lack viable mobility choices and should certainly look to Bay County for a stellar transportation model. County residents are fortunate to have an exceptional transit system in Bay Town Trolley."

Bay Town Trolley is an award-winning transit system that serves the growing needs of Bay County, Monday through Friday, with hundreds of stops daily.
