(Panama City, Fla.) - Bay Town Trolley staff is excited to announce kick-off of the ninth annual Harvest Trolley food drive. This year, the countywide drive will run from Nov. 1 – 19, 2007. Donations will benefit the Salvation Army’s Christmas Assistance Program, which distributes food to needy families and individuals in the Bay County area.
Based on the latest 2000 U.S. Census report, Bay County statistics show that 12 percent of residents are living below poverty level. In an effort to give back, residents are urged to donate canned goods or non-perishable food items at any of the 50 local businesses, organizations and schools participating as drop off locations. A complete listing of locations is attached.
“Through programs such as Harvest Trolley, we are able to show our commitment to the community and give back to those in need,” said Doug Boice, General Manager for Bay Town Trolley. “This is such a rewarding time of year as we see residents pull together for the good of Bay County.”
For the second consecutive year, Bay Town Trolley is taking donations aboard each individual trolley and encourages riders to participate with the “Food for Fare” promotion. Any donation of two canned goods results in one free ride.
"The food collected plays a vital role in placing food on the table for many families in need during the Christmas season,” said Scott Hoover, Community Relations with Salvation Army. “Last year, the Salvation Army assisted nearly 1,200 families with food."
Over the years, Bay Town Trolley has worked with over 100 local businesses and schools to donate over 25,000 pounds of food. This year, many have already stepped up to give a helping hand. In addition to Salvation Army efforts, Chautauqua Learn & Serve School has donated time to help coordinate Harvest Trolley logistics.
